Million Dollar Makeover – 5 Things You Can Do To Make Your Concrete Deck Look Fabulous
Whether your deck is old, cracked or simply dirty, even brand new decks won’t look fabulous for long unless with regular care and maintenance. Here are five things you can do to make any deck look fabulous. How many have you tried?
#1. Use Sealant Every Year
Decks look fabulous when they are brand new but they don’t stay looking that way for long. Many people think that concrete is not permeable but in fact, it still needs to be sealed. Decking can look grey and worn within a few years if you don’t apply deck sealer every year. Deck sealer prevents the concrete from absorbing moisture. Moisture is the main reason why concrete decks fade, crack and discolor. In winter, moisture will seep into cracks, expand as it freezes and enlarge the cracks. Concrete sealant minimizes this and will keep your deck looking fabulous for longer. Apply deck sealant every year in the fall using a garden sprayer.
#2. Use Deck Wash Every Six Months
Just like deck sealant, deck wash is designed to be sprayed onto decking with a garden sprayer. Deck wash can transform faded grey concrete back to its original color. Simply spray on deck wash and scrub it with a broom. Rinse it off after 15 minutes. Deck wash includes a brightening agent that will make even faded decking look awesome. Do this twice a year: once in the fall and once again in the spring.
#3. Pressure Wash Your Deck
Deck wash will give any decking a makeover whether you use a power washer or not. However, your deck will look far nicer if you use a high-pressure washer. These run off electricity and connect to your mains water. They create a powerful scrubbing action that will compliment your cleaning efforts.
#4. Fill The Cracks
Cracks can be hard to avoid but are not a reliable indicator that the concrete decking needs replacing. Any decking can be improved with the use of a concrete crack repair product. Minor cracks can be completely eliminated with these kits, leaving the surface looking brand new.
#5. Resurface The Concrete
There are many reasons why the first four tips in this article cannot help improve your decking. For instance, if you have recently moved into your home, the previous owner may have neglected the concrete. All of the above ideas will be more effective if you contact a professional firm. If that still does work, concrete resurfacing is a unique way to transform old concrete for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. You may wish to have a polymer overlay sprayed or toweled on. You may wish to have the polymer resin pressed or stamped to replicate the look of natural stone. You may want to have your decking etched, stained or stenciled. The choice is yours.
These five tips will help anyone with concrete decking to completely transform its appearance. Decking needs regular maintenance to look fabulous. What do you think of our tips? Let us know in the comments below!
